London City Airport's 2006 Master Plan set out our growth and development plans through to 2030. It was developed in response to the Government's 2003 Aviation White Paper, 'The Future of Air Transport', which required specified airport operators to outline their vision for growth up to 2030.
The Airport Master Plan demonstrated how we could accommodate 8 million passengers by 2030 to support the growth of London and the continued demand for business travel, while still remaining good neighbours and maintaining an excellent environmental record.
Specifically, we had, and still have, no plans to change our operating hours, we will continue to close at night and for 24 hours at the weekend and we have no need for an additional runway, or an extension to the existing runway.. Growth will instead be accommodated by maximising the use of the existing runway (in line with Government policy), creating better facilities for passengers, and developing our infrastructure to accommodate the 120,000 flight movements per year for which we already have permission.
With an increasing focus on East London and the Thames Gateway, especially following the success of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the role of London City Airport as gateway to the area, a key regenerator and major employer will be strengthened further. Furthermore, the airport sees the potential for the creation of over 2,500 additional on-site jobs by 2030 (with more off-site), with a continued focus on the business travel market.
In 2012/13, the Airport Master Plan is being refreshed to include the elements of the City Airport Development Programme (CADP) – a plan for development of the airport’s infrastructure to meet the demands of increased passenger numbers and larger, next-generaton aircraft.
