LONDON CITY AIRPORT WELCOMES NEW CHAIRMAN

Today, Tuesday 16 January 2007, London City Airport welcomed their new Non Executive Chairman, Roy Griffins. Roy joins London City Airport following the last two years as Director General of the Airports Council International in Brussels prior to which he was Director General of Civil Aviation in the UK Department of Transport.

Roy has been appointed by the Airport’s new owners (AIG and GIP) to work with the existing Airport management team to drive the development plans forward in order to maximise the potential of the investment.

Roy believes that London City Airport has a very exciting growth potential: “2006 was an excellent year for the Airport, the route network grew from 26 destinations to 31, and has already increased further this year with the launch of services to Rome. Plus, we reached the 2 million-passenger milestone in a calendar year for the first time.

“Looking ahead I’m confident that 2007 will prove to be equally successful. In order to grow and maximise the potential of the Airport, our immediate plan will be to increase capacity.”

Richard Gooding, Chief Executive for London City Airport is delighted to welcome Roy on board: “We are fortunate to secure Roy Griffins services as Chairman, his commercial experience particularly in air transport and planning will be invaluable as the Airport develops over the next few years.”

Editors note

Roy Griffins spent the last two years as Director General of the Airports Council International in Brussels. Previously MR Griffins had a distinguished, thirty-year career in the British civil and diplomatic service, mostly in international, transport and environment posts. He served as the UK’s Director General of Civil Aviation from 1999 to 2004. During this time he was responsible for the public private partnership of the UK’s national air traffic services (NATS) and the Air Transport White Paper of December 2003, the most important expression of British aviation policy for twenty years, recently reconfirmed as the UK’s long term airports and air transport strategy.

A fluent French speaker, Roy Griffins served in both the UK Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels and in the British Embassy in Washington DC, where his portfolios included air services, aerospace trade, transport, environment and shipping policy. Mr Griffins is a graduate of Bristol University (French and German) and studied at the Sorbonne and the Ecole Nationale d’Adminstration in Paris. He was made Companion of the order of the Bath (CB) in the UK’s 2003 Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Mr Griffins is also the British Chairman of the Channel Tunnel Intergovernmental Commission, a non-executive Director of the London Ambulance Service NHS Trust, a member of the Franco-British Council, and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
