Preparations are under way for London City Airport’s eleventh annual Fun Day. Taking place on 7 July 2007, London City Airport Fun Day promises an exciting day out for local residents and friends. Each year in July, the airport’s runway makes way for thousands of community members to enjoy the day’s festivities.
This year’s Fun Day promises to be the most exhilarating to date with a spectacular assortment of activities. The X-Treme Motorcycle Stunt Display Team will attempt jumps up 15ft tall vertical walls and freestyle tricks only tried by a handful of daredevil riders worldwide. An aerial circus, roller rink and human table football add to the adventure, whilst the less daring can enjoy a display of birds of prey or reminisce in yesteryear and participate in an afternoon tea dance.
London City Airport Fun Day demonstrates the diversity of East London with culinary offerings ranging from hamburgers and chips to authentic Caribbean food; arts and crafts from across the globe; vintage Cortinas typify the region’s longstanding affinity to the car whilst West Ham Football Club will be there to kick a ball or two around the pitch. The afternoon will culminate in London’s only air show.
The airport is also celebrating its 20th birthday this year. First opened in 1987 by Queen Elizabeth II, London City Airport now supports the employment of nearly 2,000 local residents with a record 2.5 million passengers travelling to and from the airport in 2006.
“We are excited to offer this spectacular event to our neighbours, the local community, on the 20th anniversary of the airport. The London City Airport Fun Day is an event that is met with enthusiasm both by airport employees and local residents and we’re confident this year’s festivities will be bigger than ever before,” said Richard Gooding, chief executive of London City Airport.
The London City Airport Fun Day is an annual event established in 1996 to offer thanks to the local community for their ongoing support. What started as an afternoon of tea and cakes is now an event attended by over 10,000 members of the community with a staggering £20,000 raised in 2006. All proceeds from London City Airport’s annual Fun Day are donated to East London’s Richard House, a children’s hospice that cares for life limited children and young people.
