The annual Bursary scheme set up by London City Airport with London Borough of Newham celebrated its third anniversary in September.
The celebration took place at the airport where Richard Gooding OBE, Chief Executive of London City Airport, awarded two students who have recently graduated a trophy and a prize voucher. The students, Rume Khanon and Rahela Begum, received financial support from the airport throughout their degrees until their recent graduation.
Richard said “In running our Annual Bursary Scheme we help the selected students cover some of the costs incurred throughout life at university. Financial barriers should not get in the way of any student achieving their full potential, so we are very proud of the support we have offered over the past three years, to a total of so far nine students”.
This year the airport has upgraded the scheme and renamed it to The University Prize Scheme, which alongside financial assistance, offers an airport manager as a mentor, paid work experience and additional training opportunities. The scheme is open to all college students that both study and reside in Newham.
This year two students from St Angela’s and Bonaventure’s Sixth Form College were successful in their applications. The airport will support these students throughout their time at their chosen universities, along with seven other students that are already receiving support under the Bursary Scheme.
Councillor Alec Kellaway of London Borough of Newham commented, “Many congratulations to all of the students. They are all clearly working hard, and are highly motivated. Particular praise to those who graduate this summer – I wish them well in their chosen careers. I would also like to thank London City Airport for sponsoring the scheme. Not only has the money provided a worthwhile boost to the Students, the London City Airport Bursary Scheme also provides work experience, which is invaluable in helping students decide on their career choices. I only hope that other Employers will now provide Students with such quality placements!”
