The London City Airport Community Relations department works hard to further strengthen links with it’s neigbours, local community and businesses. Rohima Begum, a graduate from Queen Mary University of London is the latest addition to the team. Rohima is a Tower Hamlets resident who initially joined the team as a trainee when London City Airport participated in a pilot programme called the Community Affairs Trainee Scheme. The scheme, co-ordinated by the East London Business Alliance (ELBA), recruited six unemployed Tower Hamlets graduates who were interested in working in the City and Canary Wharf in the field of community affairs.
Training was provided for the six graduates through Pitmans Business English, Ashridge Business School and Tower Hamlets College. The graduates were then placed in the community affairs departments of six ELBA member companies for a six month paid work placement.
Elizabeth Hegarty, Community Relations Manager, said “We were very impressed with Rohima’s progress and development during her time with the London City Airport Community Relations Department. She has implemented community projects with our local partners that would not have been possible without the additional resource that she brought. As a result we are happy to announce Rohima has now become an additional full time member of the Community Relations Team.”
Elizabeth continues “With Rohima onboard, there are now three full time employees at London City Airport focused solely on community relations. This will enable us to continue the wide range of projects ongoing in Newham and expand our community programmes into the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Greenwich and Barking and Dagenham”.
Rohima is now one of the 70% of London City Airport staff who live within a five mile radius of the airport.
