London City Airport is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Poplar, Blackwall and District Rowing Club (PBDRC) based on the Isle of Dogs. London City Airport has committed a three year sponsorship to PBDRC which provides rowing and training facilities for all levels of abilities.
PBDRC organises many events including their recent annual rowing event, the Poplar Regatta. Crews took up the challenge of a 2000 meter course along the Royal Albert Dock which overlooks the airport. The event was a huge success with over 60 rowing clubs taking part and hundreds of supporters cheering on the competitors. The spectators included Rohima Begum from the London City Airport Community Relations Team, Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham and Councillor Anne Jackson Mayor of Tower Hamlets.
As well as the annual £2000 sponsorship for the next three years London City Airport also contributed a trophy for the Poplar Regatta. The trophy donated by London City Airport was for the Most Valued Coach and was awarded to the coaching team of the London Rowing Club.
Elizabeth Hegarty, Community Relations Manager for London City Airport said, “This sponsorship agreement is one of many ventures by the airport to expose and support a variety of team sports for young people. It encourages team building as well as self-discipline and those are basic skills that an individual can take onto whatever future path they pursue.”
Alan Taylor, Deputy Co-Chairman of the Poplar Regatta Committee said, “The financial support received from London City Airport enabled us to run yet another extremely successful regatta – our 23rd in the Royal Albert Dock. Some 260 crews took part in this year’s regatta and with London City Airport’s support guaranteed for the next two years it will ensure that Poplar Regatta continues as a prestigious event in the rowing calendar.”
Formed in 1845 the PBDRC is is believed to be the third oldest rowing club in Great Britain, offering coaching, a range of amenities including an eight-person rowing tank, fully equipped gym and a fleet of boats of all sizes.
