Big hitters swap fairway for runway in world record attempt

Some of golf’s biggest hitters swapped the Fairway for the Runway this weekend in an attempt to record the world’s longest tee shot to launch the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign’s Four Course Classic – the UK’s biggest golf challenge.

Five members of the Long Drivers of Europe Tour took to the tarmac at London City Airport for their world record challenge, aiming to beat the existing 884 yard record set by Paul ‘St George’ Slater four years ago.

On this occasion however, a strong cross-wind meant that no world record was possible, Slater coming closest with a 598 yard effort despite playing with a broken hand. The arctic conditions meant that no competitor could top the 600-yard mark, Steven Kinder coming a close second with a 594 yard strike.

The event took place to launch the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign’s Four Course Classic – the UK’s biggest golf challenge. The charity is calling for golfers across the UK to sign up at www.fourcourseclassic.co.uk to play four local courses in sixteen frantic hours this summer to raise over £250,000 for the fight against muscle disease.

Winning golfer Paul ‘St George’ Slater said:

"I'm really pleased to have won today but disappointed I didn't manage to get closer to my record. The conditions were pretty tough with the cold and wind making life difficult!

"I want to encourage every golfer to take on their ultimate golfing challenge by signing up for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign's Four Course Classic. Playing four courses in one day will be a great challenge and raise vital sponsorship money."

Richard Gooding OBE, Chief Executive London City Airport commented:

“We are delighted to participate in the launch of the Four Course Classic Golf Challenge and to support the Muscular Dystrophy Charity Campaign.”

London City Airport is the UK's leading business airport serving over 30 destinations across the UK and Europe. For golfers many of the destinations served by the airport are within easy reach of premium golf courses.

Paul Slater’s top tip: You don't strike the ball with your backswing:

“When trying to hit a ball further most people will try and speed up everything on their backswings. This actually slows the club head down. The focus should always be on timing and rhythm.

“When you watch professional golfers they all appear quite slow in their movements yet they all hit immense distances. Next time you practice try and slow your backswing, relax and watch how much further the ball flies when you focus on your downswing and follow through.”

Slater used a Cobra Pro D X-Speed 5.5° club with a UST V2 LD4 Shaft and Pinnacle Gold Distance balls for his record attempt.

The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign is the leading UK charity focusing on muscle disease. It has pioneered the search for treatments and cures for over 50 years, and is dedicated to improving the lives of all babies, children and adults affected by muscle disease.

It funds world-class research to find effective treatments and cures; provides free practical and emotional support; campaigns to raise awareness and bring about change and awards grants towards the cost of specialist equipment, such as powered wheelchairs.
