The Poplar Rowing Regatta and its 1400 participants came to the Royal Docks again this year, hosting its annual one day event with sponsorship from London City Airport.
The Poplar Regatta has been running at the docks since 1984 and is fast becoming one of the most popular events in Rowing Clubs’ diaries across the country. Over 71 clubs, schools and universities attended the event, with around 1400 participants taking part in categories including Juniors, Intermediate and Elite. The event is run by Poplar, Blackwall and District Rowing Club based in Ferry Street, Isle of Dogs, which was formed in 1845 and is believed to be the third oldest rowing club in Great Britain.
London City Airport has supported Poplar Rowing Club since 2007 and sponsors the annual event as part of the airport’s health and wellbeing for work programme, which engages young people in sports and activities to encourage them to get active, aim high and achieve their goals for a positive future.
John Roberts, Committee Member of the Rowing Club said ‘We are very grateful for the support from City Airport for the Poplar Regatta, as it has enabled us to improve our services and the overall upgrading of the Regatta. This has attracted more competitors and made Poplar Regatta one of the biggest one day Regatta's in the country. Since City Airport has been sponsoring us we have had record entries in 2008 and again in 2009 and this year was by far the biggest’.
