Applications Invited For Annual London City Airport Student Bursary
Young people in east London hoping to go to university in September but worried about how they’ll fund their studies can apply for a grant from London City Airport.
The University Prize Scheme is now in its ninth year and provides a £2,000 bursary for each year of a three year course, as well as management mentors and paid work experience.
Three students are selected each year to benefit from the scheme and applications are now invited for the next academic year. The closing date for applicants is Friday 5th July.
To be eligible, the student must live in Newham, Tower Hamlets or Greenwich, have a place to begin an undergraduate degree this year related to transport, business, geography or foreign languages and be expecting to achieve a minimum of 240 UCAS points.
Billy Allgood is a third year geography student at Southampton University and has been supported by the London City Airport University Prize Scheme throughout his studies.
He said: “The scheme has really helped me to have a successful and fulfilling university experience. One of the biggest benefits has been the varied work experience offered by the airport. After I graduate I have been accepted to do a PGCE for primary school teaching back in east London and the interviews were made a lot easier by the fact that I could draw on a my experiences gained through the scheme.”
Liam McKay, Head of CSR at London City Airport said: “As one of the biggest employers and economic drivers in the area, the airport recognises its responsibility to the local community. The University Prize Scheme is designed to give a helping hand to young people from the local area who want to go to university to boost their career prospects. It also helps to up-skill people who may remain in the area and become future employees of the airport or other local businesses, or start companies of their own. We look forward to welcoming the next intake of students and watching their progress throughout the course of their studies and beyond.”
