Latest new from London City Airport

Busiest Month Ever at London City Airport

The only airport actually in London, London City Airport [LCY] is continuing to go from strength to strength.

July saw another record-breaking month at the airport, with the highest ever number of passengers passing through.

Some 328,115 people flew through LCY in July, a 25 per cent increase on the same period in 2012 and 12,600 more than the previous record, set in May this year.

Matthew Hall, Chief Commercial Officer at London City Airport said:  “London City Airport is primarily a business airport, which suggests that the summer months would be quieter for us.  However, with airlines adding more leisure routes and additional business destination frequencies, this summer is so far turning out to be even busier than the winter months.

“While we are delighted that more people are choosing the convenience of LCY, these numbers demonstrate the importance of developing our existing infrastructure.  We have submitted a planning application for works including an extension to the terminal building, to help us maintain and enhance the level of customer service excellence that our passenger customers rightly expect.”

New routes added at London City Airport since last summer include; Aberdeen, Dresden, Kristiansand, Nuremberg, Paderborn, Rome and Venice, as well as additional frequencies to Luxemburg and Milan.

Editors note

London City Airport (LCY) is the only London airport situated in London itself, just three miles from Canary Wharf, seven miles from the City and 10 miles from London’s West End and linked to all via the Docklands Light Railway. Catering for over 3 million passengers and 70,000 movements annually, in 2012 LCY celebrated its millionth flight, 36 millionth passenger and 25 years of operation. LCY offers a unique rapid transit proposition – a short check in, door to lounge, and a shorter arrival, tarmac to train.  11 airlines fly out of LCY, serving 47 destinations, eight of which were new for 2012, with six further announced in 2013.  The airport has permission to increase its operation to 120,000 movements per annum, which it intends to do by 2023.  Further information about the airport and its services can be found by browsing our website.
