London City Airport Launches University Prize Scheme

Date: 11/06/2007

11 June 2007- London City Airport is proud to announce the launch of its new University Prize Scheme. As part of the airport’s Education Excellence Programme, London City Airport invites students who are residents of Newham and have applied to study a degree in the fields of transport, business studies, foreign languages or geography from September 2007 to enter for the new scheme.

Following an application process, two students will be chosen to each receive £2,000 per year whilst they attend university for a period of up to three years. The sponsorship scheme aims to make higher education more accessible for Newham residents as the awarded sum assists towards the cost of university expenses such as books, travel and equipment. Additionally, London City Airport will provide the chosen students mentors from the airport management team, paid work experience placements, volunteering opportunities and additional training at the airport.

The deadline for applications to the London City Airport University Prize Scheme is 13 July 2007. All Further Education providers in Newham have received application packs and interested students should approach their careers advisors for further information. Short-listed candidates will be invited to London City Airport for a half-day assessment currently scheduled for 27 July 2007.

The airport’s University Prize Scheme is a programme designed to develop students residing in Newham who have an interest and understanding of the airport business, or a related subject. The scheme is open to students aiming to achieve at least 240 UCAS points and have applied to attend university this September. The scheme aims to build education capacity in the local area and encourage a larger number of students from local colleges to consider higher education and to ‘aim high’.  The scheme is just one of the airport’s Education Excellence programmes, which aim to raise the attainment levels of students in Newham and surrounding areas, ranging from Primary to Higher Education.
