LONDON CITY AIRPORT CALLS FOR EAST LONDON HELIPORT

Date: 13/10/2006

London City Airport launches ‘The Future of Helicopter Operations in London’ discussion document, following the airport’s suggestion to the London Assembly Environment Committee back in July 2006 to establish an East London Heliport.

Richard Gooding, Chief Executive of London City Airport has launched a discussion to stimulate in an East London Heliport.

Richard agrees with the Mayor’s London Plan that there is a need for a heliport and that it should be located east of the city and the Isle of Dogs: ”It is not currently necessary to license a helicopter site unless it is to be used by a scheduled helicopter service or for flying instruction, which is why many of the current helicopter operations over London are unscheduled and unregulated.  We foresee with the continued regeneration of East London that the growth in helicopter movements will continue.

“In light of the growing demand, it is important to identify the impact of increased helicopter movements operating in the London airspace and how it will affect the overall air traffic flow.  Research is needed to highlight and assist in the development of control regulations to ensure the efficient use of the London airspace.”

Development of a suitable site would enable the Airport to introduce measures that will control helicopter movements over London, a controlled zone, to efficiently integrate helicopters with other air traffic in that area, and minimise the noise footprint.

Richard Continues:” We do not expect such a site to be located at London City Airport as it would, potentially, conflict with our existing business.  We expect to see existing helicopter routes extended, to follow the Thames.  By introducing an East Heliport on the banks of the Thames, we would be able to enforce a co-ordinated approach, maximising the use of airspace and minimising the impact on the environment. Our knowledge of the area, industry and current operation enables us to take the debate about of an East London Heliport forward, introducing control measures to regulate helicopter movements over London.”
