Potter Party at London City Airport

27/07/2007

London City Airport recently launched an exciting competition, inviting students of Newham’s Drew Primary School to design a book jacket for an imaginary airport version of ‘Harry Potter and the Fantastical Flight’.

A winner from each year group was invited to an exclusive Harry Potter party at the airport, where they received copies of the new and final book in the JK Rowling series, ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’. The students were also enticed with a copy of Mister Monday, the first in a magical new series by author Garth Nix.

The books were all kindly donated by Hughes and Hughes Bookstore, located within the airport terminal. “It is a delight to see students enjoying books so much. The entries for the book jacket were colourful and creative, it was a very tough job choosing an overall winner,” said Don Davern, store manager of Hughes & Hughes.

In addition to the party, all winners, runners up and participants were presented with certificates by the airport’s community relations manager, Elizabeth Hegarty, at a school assembly on Wednesday 18 July 2007.

The competition is just one initiative in the airport’s education excellence programme, fostering basic skills, in this case literacy and a desire to read, amongst Newham’s young people.
