West Ham Church Primary School recently triumphed winning the Newham All Star Sports Academy (NASSA) Primary Basketball League 2008, supported by London City Airport.
The League, which was launched in December 2007, saw twelve Newham primary schools receive basketball coaching from NASSA and compete in monthly competitions.
This year, London City Airport added heat to the competition by not only sponsoring the league financially, but by donating trophies, medals, basketballs and sports vouchers for the winning teams.
Month by month, winners prevailed to maintain their place in the league. The final competition on 28 March saw the remianing eight teams fight it out to win the title. After six matches, West Ham Church and Curwen went head-to-head in the final, with West Ham Church winning by an impressive 6-0.
Elizabeth Hegarty, Community Relations Manager for London City Airport commented: “The Airport’s health and wellbeing programme has a strong focus on team sports for young people. Participating in competitions such as the Primary Basketball League gives young people in Newham the opportunity to learn new skills, meet new friends and aspire to win. We are proud to have supported this project which was superbly co-ordinated by NASSA.”
Director of NASSA, Natasha Hart, said “Basketball is such a fast paced sport which takes great coordination. All of the children really grasped these skills during the coaching sessions and their hard work and effort paid off. The competition was a great success and we now have very eager children who can’t wait for the next league!”
NASSA has been going from strength to strength, with their Under 13 team recently crowned National Champions in the Under 13s National Games.
