Winners Announced: London City Airport Annual Art Awards Sponsored by Newham Council and West Ham United Football Club

07/05/2009

Now in its twelfth year, the annual Art Awards sponsored by the London Borough of Newham and West Ham United Football Club is a competition for artists and photographers who live locally to the airport. This year artists were asked to theme their work around health, sport and fitness in line with the airport Community Relations Team’s focus on health and well being.

Nearly forty entries were received of which seventeen were short listed as finalists and displayed in the airport terminal. All finalists were invited to an awards ceremony at the airport hosted by Richard Gooding OBE, Chief Executive of London City Airport and Newham Mayor Sir Robin Wales, where the winners were announced.

The first prize of £500 was awarded to Parvin Khoshdale from Beckton for her oil on canvas piece entitled Hitman, the Proud of Sport. Parvin said “I have entered the annual Art Awards every year since they began twelve years ago. I was lucky enough to receive third prize twice in previous years. I really enjoyed the challenge of this year’s topic and I am delighted to have won”

Mavis Grant from Ilford scooped the second prize of £300 for her oil painting entitled Healthy Food, whilst in third place was Lucinda Waits from Moorgate. Lucinda took home the £200 prize for her artwork entitled Pedal Power.

Sir Robin Wales said “I am delighted by the depth of artist talent in the local area, matched with the keen sense of competition”.

Steve Marriott from Stratford, Anne Neary from Dagenham and Gerry Shevlin from Beckton were highly commended for their entries. They were each awarded autographed football memorabilia courtesy of West Ham United Football Club.

Richard Gooding said “I would like to congratulate everyone who took part in the London City Airport Art Awards 2009. This year we received a very high standard of entries and with the support of the London Borough of Newham and West Ham United Football PLC we were able to award equally brilliant prizes”.

The Annual Art Awards exhibition will remain on display within the airport terminal until Friday 15 May.
