Airport puts local youngsters’ basketball skills to the test

London City Airport, in partnership with London Borough of Newham, encouraged teams to jump, dribble and slam dunk during the school holidays at the London City Airport 3-vs-3 Basketball Tournament.

The tournaments, split into four age groups ranging from 12 to 18 year olds, took place in a variety of locations across Newham and saw teams battle for the coveted title of first place in each category.

Elizabeth Hegarty, Community Relations Manager for London City Airport, said: “in creating this tournament our aim was to bring together youngsters from across Newham and encourage them to participate in this fast paced and exciting sport. Basketball requires quick thinking, teamwork and good communication which all of the players can make good use of both on and off the court”.

The lucky winners from each age group were awarded tickets to indulge in some of the best basketball action as top stars took part in the Four Nations Basketball Tournament at the O2 arena. The action-packed celebratory evening was also attended by the airport’s community relations team and Newham Councillor Richard Crawford who presented the winners with commemorative certificates.

Over 100 local youngsters took park in the tournament which was an exciting addition to the school holidays activities, complementing the airport’s health and wellbeing for work community programme, which encourages local people to get fit and healthy for employment.
