1000th National Idenitication Card Issued to Airport Chief

Richard Gooding OBE, Chief Executive of London City Airport, was the 1000th UK citizen to receive an ID card today and the first to receive one at London City.

The card was presented by James Hall, Chief Executive of the Identity and Passport Service, at City Airport.

The news follows the successful launch last week of the national ID card to those living and working in Greater Manchester, and to airside workers at Manchester and London City Airports.

The £30 identity cards provide a secure and convenient way for people to prove their identity and can be used in place of a passport for travel throughout Europe.

Being the first member of staff at London City airport to apply for and receive his identity card, Richard Gooding said:

“Providing a safe and secure environment to staff working on site at London  City Airport is fundamental to our business.  The critical workers identity cards  will further strengthen the airports vigorous employment screening  measures.”

Chief Executive of the Identity and Passport Service, James Hall, said:

“We are excited to have started the rollout of identity cards. To have reached  this milestone of the 1000th identity card being issued so quickly after  launching the service is very encouraging, and enrolment appointments are  filling up fast.

“Airport workers in Manchester and  London City airports are the first group  of critical workers to enjoy the security and convenience identity cards bring. I  look forward to accelerating the rollout of the service in the New Year.”
