London City Airport Goes Red for Richard House

On Friday 19 February 2010, to raise much-needed funds to support Richard House Children’s Hospice in Beckton, staff from London City Airport “went red”.

Staff from a range of the 61 companies on-site at London City Airport sported red clothing, accessories, shoes and socks and each donated £2 for participating, raising over £500 for Richard House Children’s Hospice, the airport’s chosen charity since 1995.

In order that airport staff in uniform were able to participate, the London City Airport Community Team sourced and sold high-visibility red armbands, for which customer services, ramp services engineering and other staff were able to donate £2 for the privilege of wearing.

London City Airport has supported Richard House Children’s Hospice, which offers support to families who have children with life-threatening or complex healthcare needs between the ages of 0 and 19, for fifteen years.  Fundraising projects including the airport Fun Day, staff raffles and fundraising evenings, donations and support for the annual Richard House Ball have helped the airport become one of the top five corporate donors to the Hospice since opening.

Sharon Lee, Ramp Services Administrator, lives nearby the Hospice in Custom House and said “there are many staff on the ramp who want to support local charities and this is a great way of doing so, making the team feel that their contribution is worthwhile”.

Viv Talbot, Community Fundraising Manager for Richard House said “Once again the staff at London City Airport have excelled in their fundraising efforts with Go Red. £500 is a fantastic amount to raise and will fully fund a complete day of care at Richard House for a child. As Kimberly, one of our young people explains: “The only time I get out is when I can come to Richard House - which is really good. I love it. It’s the best. It’s so cool, everyone’s so nice and I get to go out and have a normal life.”
