London City Airport’s Tower Goes Paper Free

London City Airport’s Air Traffic Control Tower, managed by NATS, the UK's leading air traffic services provider, recently became a paper free operation.

The Airport recently introduced advanced Electronic Flight Progress Strips technology (EFPS), developed by NAV CANADA the civil air navigation service provider in Canada.  Prior to the implementation of the EFPS air traffic system controllers managed aircraft movements using paper strips.

The Airport’s transition to the EFPS technology increases the efficiency of the air traffic control operation by streamlining the co-ordination of departing, arriving and ground aircraft movements.

London City Airport’s investment in this technology further enhances the passenger experience with improved punctuality and increased service levels.

Gary Hodgetts, Director Operations, Policy and Planning at London City Airport commented: “The Airports transition to the EFPS technology is a significant advance which has streamlined and improved Air Traffic Control operations.  Investment in this technology is an essential building block for the Airport and it ensures the traveller’s journey is seamless.”

Steve Anderson, General Manager for NATS at London City Airport added: ”I’m very proud to be part of the team that has delivered EFPS at City. It will enable our controllers to move aircraft in and out of the airport more efficiently, thereby saving time and minimising fuel burn.”

John Crichton, NAV CANADA President and CEO said "We are pleased that more of our colleagues around the world recognize the proven and reliable capabilities of this technology. The London City Airport deployment demonstrates the flexibility of our solutions which are adaptable to a wide range of local operational environments."

London City Airport is the UK's leading business airport serving over 30 destinations across the UK, Europe and the USA and connections to the rest of the world through major European hubs.
