Staff and pupils at Scott Wilkie Primary School in Custom House are enjoying a new computer and books for the school’s recently developed library courtesy of London City Airport and on-site partner, WH Smith. The computer, specifically designed for use by schools, was purchased by the airport to coincide with the school’s newly revamped library facilities and sits in pride of place in the student’s library area. The library has recently been refurbished with a new layout and shelving units and books re-categorised according to topics within the school curriculum, making them more easily accessible for pupils and staff.
The computer will be used for a child managed book loan system, allowing pupils to take books from the library for personal use as well as encouraging the use of ICT at the school. London City Airport has supported Scott Wilkie Primary School through a range of initiatives from staff volunteering to donations in recent years and this sponsorship forms part of the airport’s Educational Excellence Programme, which aims to attain and improve basic skills levels in students across East London. The WH Smith store onsite at the airport also kindly donated a selection of new books to add to the new collection
Steven Thompson, Key Stage 2 Literacy Coordinator at the school, said ‘the contribution of the computer as well as the books will play an important role in the future of our library. This allows our school to place an even greater focus onto reading and Literacy which will raise pupil’s attainment’
