London City Airport Gives Young People A Splashing Time

Young people from the Britannia Village Hall ‘I Heart BV’ Summer scheme were able to sample a whole host of water sports activities recently thanks to London City Airport.

The day out, which forms part of a busy schedule for the Britannia Village Play Scheme, is aimed at encouraging young people from the area to have fun, get fit and beat the boredom of the summer holidays, saw youngsters get involved in bell-boating and team raft building challenges.

Over 25 young people enjoyed the activities, which were funded by a grant from the Airport and took place at the Royal Docks Water Sports Activity Centre, close to the Village Hall. The Play Scheme, which runs Monday to Thursday over the school holidays, sees up to 50 young people per day enjoy a range of activities including arts, crafts, dance and sport.

London City Airport also sponsored another trip to the Community Links Outdoor Activity Centre in Canning Town, and has supported Britannia Village Hall for a number of years as part of its health and wellbeing for work programme. Young people from across Newham and other neighboring boroughs are encouraged to get active, participate in sport and channel their energy into something constructive.

Britannia Village Hall Manager David Mann said: ‘These Friday outings were the icing on the cake of our ‘I love BV’ Play Scheme. It’s good for our kids to broaden their horizons and take on new challenges within walking distance of their homes. They had great fun and overcame their fear of water and of heights. Money this year is tighter than ever so we are very grateful to London City Airport for sponsoring these two trips.’
