London City Airport sponsors Irish athlete of the year

London City Airport (LCY) has announced the sponsorship of Irish high jumper , Deirdre Ryan, backing her Olympic bid and highlighting the significant relationship between London City and Dublin, one of the Airport’s busiest routes. 

Due to London City’s proximity to Olympic venues, its role as an important gateway for visitors in 2012 and as a part of its inbound-focused commercial strategy for 2012 and beyond, the Airport has decided to show support for a sporting champion from one of its most important source markets. Recently announced ‘Irish Athlete of the Year’ at the AAI National Athletics Awards, and Irish Olympic hopeful Ryan was therefore thought to be a great ambassador – both for her country and, in Ireland, for the Airport.

The sponsorship of Ryan and her newly created ambassadorial role is a central element of the Airport’s commercial strategy for 2012, which focuses on inbound growth and key source markets, such as Dublin. Dublin is London City Airport’s sixth busiest route and we have identified significant growth potential, making it integral to the airport’s continued development.

CityJet offers a comprehensive flight schedule from Dublin to London City Airport with up to 5 flights per day to the UK, affording business and leisure travellers convenient choices for trips to London. Located in East London, the airport serves the financial and business districts of Canary Wharf  and The City as well as having excellent links to the West End via the on-site Docklands Light Railway. With easy access to the recently opened Westfield Stratford City, the largest urban shopping centre in Europe, as well as Olympic venues including the Olympic Stadium and Park, ExCel, the O2 (North Greenwich Arena during the Olympics), and Woolwich Arsenal, the airport is ideally placed to welcome visitors in 2012.

About Deirdre Ryan: High Jumper Deirdre Ryan is one of Ireland’s most outstanding athletes, and is the National Irish High Jump record holder with a jump of 1.95m. An Olympic hopeful in the London 2012 Olympic Games, she was named ‘Irish Athlete of the Year 2011’ at last year’s National Athletic Awards following her standout performance at the World Championships, which saw her finish in sixth place and achieve her season best and a new Irish record. Following her studies in Commerce International at University College Dublin and a Masters in International Business from the Smurfit Business School, Deirdre worked for a number of years in financial services and consulting before prioritising her sporting career. She will now focus on her high jumping in preparation for the Olympic Games, training between Dublin and Germany, with the help of her technical coach Gerd Osenberg.
