London City Airport staff get green fingered at Britannia Village Hall
Nine staff members from London City Airport recently volunteered at Britannia Village Hall in West Silvertown, Newham, as part of a team challenge organised by the airport. The volunteers set to work on the community centre’s garden to give it a makeover as requested by centre users and management.
The team of nine, from various departments around London City Airport, spent a collective 36 hours at the centre working to improve the garden so that local people who use Britannia Village Hall can enjoy the space more. London City Airport has a strong relationship with Britannia Village Hall and often supports its many programmes and activities, as well as volunteering an airport manager to the Trust which manages the centre.
David Mann, Britannia Village Hall Manager, said: 'The Team Challenge was a great day, both fun and helpful. We really appreciate the practical and financial help London City Airport gives to the work of West Silvertown Foundation. Work days like this strengthen our relationship and enable LCY staff to meet local young people and build links which can help them access employment.'
London City Airport (LCY) is the only London airport situated in London itself, just three miles from Canary Wharf, seven miles from the City and 10 miles from London’s West End and linked to all via the Docklands Light Railway. Infrastructure improvements in 2011 catered for 3 million passengers and 70,000 movements, while in 2012 LCY celebrated its millionth flight, 35 millionth passenger and 25 years of operation. LCY offers a unique 20/10 proposition – a 20 minute check in, from door to gate, and a 10 minute arrival, from tarmac to train. 10 airlines fly out of LCY, serving 42 destinations, including Dublin, Madrid and Geneva . Seven new destinations were added in 2012, and the airport has permission to increase its operation to 120,000 movements per annum.
