Paralympic hopeful, Amy Marren, flying high with London City Airport

23/08/2012
Paralympic swimming star, Amy Marren, aged 13 and born in the London Borough of Newham, recently visited London City Airport with her family before her Paralympic debut in London this summer.

As well as visiting London City Airport, Amy and her family also had the opportunity to meet Her Majesty The Queen during her visit to the airport to unveil a plaque commemorating their 25th year in operation. Amy has been sponsored for three years by London City Airport, which has helped to pay for physiotherapy and training. The talented teenager will be competing in the London 2012 Paralympic Games in the Aquatics Centre for Team GB.

Amy Marren said: “I was invited to LCY for the day as they sponsored me through ELBA and UK sport.  It’s an organisation set up to help budding athletes in their way to achieve gold.  LCYs sponsorship has helped in so many ways, from travel, to kit, to fees.  It’s an expensive way of life, but one that I love.

“The staff at LCY were amazing, and so friendly, and to be next to the runway with Canary Wharf in the background was surreal - I loved every minute of it.”

This sponsorship forms part of the Airports Health and Wellbeing programme aimed at promoting healthy living in the local area amongst the young and old alike, especially during this Olympic year.

Editors note

London City Airport (LCY) is the only London airport situated in London itself, just three miles from Canary Wharf, seven miles from the City and 10 miles from London’s West End and linked to all via the Docklands Light Railway. Infrastructure improvements in 2011 catered for 3 million passengers and 70,000 movements, while in 2012 LCY celebrated its millionth flight, 35 millionth passenger and 25 years of operation. LCY offers a unique 20/10 proposition – a 20 minute check in, from door to gate, and a 10 minute arrival, from tarmac to train. 10 airlines fly out of LCY, serving 42 destinations, including Dublin, Madrid and Geneva . Seven new destinations were added in 2012, and the airport has permission to increase its operation to 120,000 movements per annum.
