Christmas Travellers at London City Airport

19/12/2013
London City Airport is expecting to see an 11 per cent increase in passengers in the run up to Christmas, compared to last year.

Matthew Hall, Chief Commercial Officer said:  “More than 50,000 people will fly through London City Airport between now and Christmas Eve.  We see a change in our passenger profile around this time of year. More people are travelling through the airport to spend Christmas with their family and friends, while less people are travelling on business.  We go from business people travelling alone with just a briefcase, to families with children, suitcases filled with gifts and thrillseekers heading for the snow with skis and snowboards.”

The predicted 11 per cent increase compared to 2012 is attributed to increased demand, new routes and increased capacity offering passengers more flexibility over when they travel.

Some of the busiest routes will be Dublin, Edinburgh and Amsterdam as people travel to see relatives, as well as Geneva, Bern, Chambery and Granada as others head to the slopes.

Editors note

London City Airport (LCY) is the only London airport situated in London itself, just three miles from Canary Wharf, seven miles from the City and 10 miles from London’s West End and linked to all via the Docklands Light Railway. Catering for around 3.5 million passengers (63% travelling on business) and 70,000 movements annually, in 2013 LCY celebrated 26 years of operation. LCY offers a unique rapid transit proposition – a short check in (door to lounge) of around 20 minutes, and a shorter arrival (tarmac to train) of around 15 minutes. 10 airlines fly out of LCY, serving 47 mainly European destinations, eight of which were new for 2013. The airport has permission to increase its operation to 120,000 movements per annum – carrying 6 million passengers - which it intends to do by 2023. Further information about the airport and its services can be found on our website.
