'Silent’ Start to Summer for Holidaymakers

23/06/2014

British Airways is celebrating the start of the great summer getaway by making sure no-one mixes business with leisure at London City Airport.

As the airline gears up for its busiest summer ever at the Docklands Airport customers flying out to holiday destinations today (June 23) were invited to take part in their own silent summer disco.

London City Airport gave away 1,000 mini radios and earphones to help passengers get in the holiday mood without disturbing the hundreds of business passengers who were also travelling through the airport.

During July and August British Airways is increasing frequency to some of its most popular holiday destinations like Ibiza, Palma and Malaga. The airline will be flying 67 return flights a week to 10 top leisure destinations from London City, increasing the number of seats by a record 42 per cent.

With three new Embraer 190 aircraft British Airways has strengthened its position as the largest airline at London City Airport in terms of destinations, flights and passenger numbers.

Luke Hayhoe, British Airways’ commercial general manager at London City said: “This will be our busiest summer ever and with the introduction of three new aircraft to the fleet we have taken the opportunity to increase frequency to some of the most popular holiday hot spots.

“But while our leisure flights are growing in popularity, our business customers are still very important to us and we are grateful to London City Airport for making sure their normal travel plans are not disturbed by the holiday music!”

Matthew Hall, chief commercial officer at London City Airport said: “It’s the time of year when we begin to see our regular business travellers going on their holidays. The Ibiza route in particular was a huge success last year and the silent disco is a great way to celebrate many of us looking forward to a bit of time off.”
