London City Airport Successfully Reduces Carbon Emissions

28/07/2014

London City Airport has been recognised for its increasing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint by Airport Carbon Accreditation, an initiative of ACI (Airports Council International) Europe.

CY has been awarded Level 2 accreditation, reflecting its success in reducing carbon emissions per passenger in 2013 and recognising its approved, detailed Carbon Management Plan, setting out how the airport will continue to reduce carbon emissions going forward.

Airport Carbon Accreditation is the only institutionally-endorsed carbon management certification standard specifically designed for airports.  The step-by-step process encourages airports to reduce their carbon emissions with an ultimate goal of carbon neutral operations.

Declan Collier, CEO of London City Airport said:  “LCY recognises that it has a duty to its neighbours and to the environment as a whole.  Since achieving Level 1 accreditation (‘Mapping’) in March 2013 we have been working hard to put in place steps to further reduce our carbon emissions and we are delighted to have been recognised for this work.  We will continue to drive this programme forward and fully intend to achieve Level 3 status.”

LCY is just the fifth airport in the UK to achieve Level 2 accreditation, alongside Heathrow, Stansted, Manchester and Farnborough.

Editors note

Airport Carbon Accreditation is the only institutionally-endorsed, carbon management certification standard specifically designed for airports. The programme independently assesses and recognises the efforts of airports to manage and reduce their carbon emissions with four levels of award: 'Mapping', 'Reduction', 'Optimisation' & 'Neutrality'. Airport Carbon Accreditation is an independent programme administered by WSP Environment & Energy, in association with ACI EUROPE and ACI ASIA-PACIFIC. Since its launch in 2009, it has been endorsed by ECAC and EUROCONTROL and received support from the European Commission and ICAO.

Airport Carbon Accreditation acknowledges that airports are at a number of different points on a journey towards comprehensive carbon management and carbon neutrality. The step-by-step process encourages airports to reduce their carbon emissions with the ultimate goal of carbon neutral operations.
