The London City Airport doubles badminton tournament took place on Thursday 21 February 2008 with over 30 young people from the Eastside Young Leaders Academy (EYLA) students taking part. London City Airport has a long standing relationship with EYLA and this is the second year the airport has organised the tournament.
The London Borough of Newham kindly donated the use of the sports hall at Lister Community School, where students and their EYLA mentors battled against London City Airport staff volunteers for a chance to win the first prize trophy.
This year’s winning duo was ten-year old Kamal Imafidon and Eastside Young Leaders Operations Manager, Samantha Joseph. Kamal just keeps on winning, having won the competition last year. Kamal has also been named London City Airport Young Leader of the Year in 2005 and 2007!
Elizabeth Hegarty, London City Airport Community Relations Manager, said “to make the tournament even more challenging airport staff from a variety of departments volunteered to take part. The students and staff volunteers really enjoyed the afternoon of fun and even with aching muscles the following day it was all worthwhile!”.
Ray Lewis, EYLA Founder said, “Kamal is a shining example of what EYLA stands for. He is driven, focused and always ready for a challenge. The future is very bright for Kamal and along with his family we are extremely proud of him”.
EYLA, based in Plaistow, helps young students from African and Caribbean backgrounds develop leadership skills for self improvement and good citizenship.
