LONDON CITY AIRPORT - VOTED BEST IN THE UK

02/02/2006
Today, Thursday 2 February 2006 the public voted London City Airport as the ‘Best UK Airport’. The title has been awarded by the readers of the consumer travel publication ‘Wanderlust’.

Commenting on this accolade, Charles Buchanan, Business Development Director for London City Airport said: “We are thrilled and honoured to receive such recognition from the travel consumer. This award confirms that London City Airport is perceived by the experienced travel readers of Wanderlust as delivering an unbeatable service for both travel within Europe and for long haul connections. As an Airport we are unique as our aim is to ensure that we provide our passengers with a travel experience that reduces both the time and stress associated with air travel.”

2005 was a very successful year for the Docklands Airport, which experienced a staggering 20% increase in passenger throughput, seeing 2 million passengers travelling via the Airport. In December 2005 the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) Extension opened, placing the Airport firmly on the transport map. The Airport’s basic proposition is to save people time. DLR now provides a high frequency service reaching Canary Wharf in 14 minutes and Bank in 22.

2006 is already looking promising for the Airport, the route network has been extended with Eastern Airways launching a new domestic service to Newcastle and SAS adding services to Stockholm to their recently launched Copenhagen flights.

The successful 2012 Olympic bid is providing real stimulus to bring about the already planned growth in the Thames Gateway. London City Airport, located just two miles from the main Games venue, is ideally placed to play a key role in the transport provision for competitors, officials and spectators at this once in a life time event.

“In the years leading up to the Olympic Games, we expect to see further growth, reaching around 3.5 million passengers per year by 2010. To accommodate this growth we will have to invest further in the Airport infrastructure. Whilst we do not need another runway, we will need more space for aircraft parking and more space for passengers in the terminal. We are confident we can do this and continue to deliver a service which exceeds the expectations of the experienced traveller.” Concludes Charles.
