London City Airport Prepares University Students to Take – Off

London City Airport’s University Prize Scheme, now in its seventh year, this week celebrated the graduation of two more of its Newham students from university.

The Scheme provides financial assistance, management mentors and annual paid work placements to local students selected to join the scheme which is advertised annually.   Since the programme started in 2004 the Airport has awarded 16 students from Newham, Tower Hamlets and Greenwich grants of more than £150,000 in total.

In addition to a £2,000 annual grant and a personal Airport Management Mentor, students also benefit from paid work experience each year in departments around the Airport to gain a better understanding of the business and its operations.

This year’s graduating students Dwayne Black and Zohaib Bhutta, both Newham residents who graduated from the scheme this year, were joined this week by other University Prize Scheme Students, Airport Mentors, the Airport’s Chief Executive and local councillors to celebrate their achievements throughout their time on the Scheme.  Both were awarded with trophies and vouchers to recognise their hard work, commitment, dedication and determination.

Zohaib Bhutta, one of the Newham residents graduating from the scheme achieved a 2:1 Class Honours degree from Queen Mary University of London and said: “It has been a great journey, the Scheme has helped me a significant amount, aside from the financial benefits, the moral support and the experience has proven to be invaluable and I am truly grateful to London City Airport.  I have since been accepted for an internship in Hong Kong for one academic year teaching Business English at a University”.

Dwayne Black, who also leaves the scheme to complete his final year at Kingston University said:  “The scheme has been very beneficial to me as it has broadened my horizons and made me realise what I actually want to be once I finish, before I was not too sure on what it is that I wanted to do. I would recommend the scheme to everyone from my experience LCY staff have always been there if you needed any advice or help with any aspect of University life. Also the work experience and training courses has proved invaluable and looks great on your CV as employers of today are looking for both good grades and work experience and LCY provide this by being on the scheme”.

Councillor Alec Kellaway, Executive Member for Business and Skills, commented "This scheme is excellent.  While the money is useful to students, they really welcome the practical experience they gain, working on various projects at London City Airport". This reminds students that there is far more than sitting in an office, and helps them develop 'employability' skills more generally". 

Successful applicants to join the 2010/2011 scheme will be announced shortly
