London City Airport Smashes Passenger Record


London City Airport [LCY] is celebrating the busiest month in its 27 year history.

In July 2014, 341,866 passengers travelled through the airport – a 4 per cent increase from the previous record set in July 2013.

The only airport in London is continuing to go from strength to strength, following a record year in 2013, with 3.381m passengers choosing LCY. The airport says the recent bumper figures are thanks to new services from British Airways such as Dusseldorf and Granada, extra flights to the likes of Ibiza, and the addition of three new aircraft to its fleet, increased frequency on key routes from Alitalia to Milan and Rome and Luxair to Luxembourg, and simply more people travelling on existing services, with Zurich, Amsterdam and Edinburgh among the busiest routes.

Matthew Hall, Chief Commercial Officer at London City Airport said: “Over the last three years we have seen sustained growth at LCY. This is a reflection of the economic recovery, with more people travelling for business and leisure. As people regain their confidence to travel, they want the ability to make choices. They are looking for higher standards and quality of experience and that is illustrated by the fact more people are choosing LCY - because of the speed and convenience we offer.”

London City Airport is currently awaiting planning permission to develop existing infrastructure. In the short to medium term, the proposed development will enable LCY to provide additional, much-needed, airport capacity for the UK, while a new runway option is identified and then built. The City Airport Development Programme will also enhance and increase air connectivity between London and the UK regions, open up new markets and accommodate next generation aircraft which are cleaner and quieter.

Mr Hall added: “Our airline partners are committed to growing with us and more and more people are choosing to fly with us. To enable us to continue to offer the same level of service, increased flexibility and more choice to passengers we need to develop.

“By 2023 we will be welcoming 6 million passengers per year and our existing facilities need to be upgraded. Our development will create 1,500 new jobs as well as a further 500 during construction, and generate an additional £750m for the UK economy.”
