London City Airport Tops Out New Aircraft Stands

18/04/2008

To mark the completion of four new aircraft stands on the eastern apron of London City Airport, executives from the airport, Carillion and Atkins, topped out the last remaining patch of concrete at a ceremonial event on 17 April 2008.

Construction of the new stands commenced in June 2007 with London City Airport investing some £30 million into the project. The new stands have been constructed by leading construction company Carillion under the management of engineering consultancy Atkins. The new stands comprise a 20,000 square metre concrete platform, supported by piles and built over the King George V dock to the east of the existing terminal. The stands will be completed for operational use in early May 2008.

The completion of this project signifies the largest construction works undergone at the airport since it was originally built in 1987. The entire project has been delivered on time and on budget.

Atkins director, Mike McNicholas said: “This project is part of an eight-year relationship with London City Airport. As with all projects we strive to provide high quality and sustainable design solutions. We are pleased to have worked with Carillion in delivering aircraft stands of the highest quality both on time and within budget.”

Adam Green, Carillion Infrastructure National Operations Director said: “I’m delighted that Carillion with our clients and partners have reached this major milestone. The teams have worked extremely hard and under tough conditions to create four new aircraft stands in the heart of London. I wish London City Airport every success for the future.”

Richard Gooding OBE, Chief Executive of London City Airport, commented “The new aircraft stands are a major development for the airport, allowing us to keep up with the spectacular growth we have encountered in recent years. It is thanks to the first-class skills of Carillion and Atkins that our vision has become a reality. We look forward to manoeuvring the first aircraft onto the fully completed stands in May.”
