London City Airport Was Blank Canvas for Art Display


Passengers travelling through London’s business airport can now browse more than just the duty free while they wait to board their flight.

London City Airport has installed an exhibition of the work by Italian artist Carlo Gavazzeni Ricordi.  The artworks are on display in the airport before security and in the main departure lounge.  Each piece has its own QR code so that a passenger can scan the code and go to a website where they can order the artwork, to be delivered straight to their home.

Matthew Hall, Chief Commercial Officer at London City Airport said:  “The installation of these stunning artworks reflects our dedication to creating our airport experience around our passengers.  The majority of passengers at LCY are business travellers and high earners.  They appreciate fine wine, fine food and fine art and we can now offer all of those things to enjoy in one place while they have a little free time on their hands.

“The exhibition, organised by Art expert Iain Brunt and his company, also represents a trial of new technology for us, using QR codes to enable people to purchase high value items to be delivered direct to their home.”

The work of Carlo Gavazzeni Ricordi received a strong critical recognition earlier this year with the solo exhibition “Theatres of Invention in Rome” at the Hermitage in St Petersburg and Schusev State Museum of Architecture (MUAR) in Moscow.  He is one of only a handful of living artists to have held the honour of a solo show at the Hermitage.  Carlo uses a range of techniques to create these artworks with the appearance of a painting.  His work depicts historical buildings and monuments in various stages of decay and in editions of three only are available.

London City Airport (LCY) is the only London airport situated in London itself, just three miles from Canary Wharf, seven miles from the City and 10 miles from London’s West End and linked to all via the Docklands Light Railway. Catering for over 3 million passengers and 70,000 movements annually, in 2012 LCY celebrated its millionth flight, 36 millionth passenger and 25 years of operation.
