London City Airport sponsors Irish athlete of the year

19/02/2012

London City Airport (LCY) has announced the sponsorship of Irish high jumper , Deirdre Ryan, backing her Olympic bid and highlighting the significant relationship between London City and Dublin, one of the Airport’s busiest routes.

Due to London City’s proximity to Olympic venues, its role as an important gateway for visitors in 2012 and as a part of its inbound-focused commercial strategy for 2012 and beyond, the Airport has decided to show support for a sporting champion from one of its most important source markets. Recently announced ‘Irish Athlete of the Year’ at the AAI National Athletics Awards, and Irish Olympic hopeful Ryan was therefore thought to be a great ambassador – both for her country and, in Ireland, for the Airport.

The sponsorship of Ryan and her newly created ambassadorial role is a central element of the Airport’s commercial strategy for 2012, which focuses on inbound growth and key source markets, such as Dublin. Dublin is London City Airport’s sixth busiest route and we have identified significant growth potential, making it integral to the airport’s continued development.

CityJet offers a comprehensive flight schedule from Dublin to London City Airport with up to 5 flights per day to the UK, affording business and leisure travellers convenient choices for trips to London. Located in East London, the airport serves the financial and business districts of Canary Wharf  and The City as well as having excellent links to the West End via the on-site Docklands Light Railway. With easy access to the recently opened Westfield Stratford City, the largest urban shopping centre in Europe, as well as Olympic venues including the Olympic Stadium and Park, ExCel, the O2 (North Greenwich Arena during the Olympics), and Woolwich Arsenal, the airport is ideally placed to welcome visitors in 2012.

Matthew Hall, Chief Commercial Officer, London City Airport said: “We think Deirdre is a great ambassador for her country and look forward to supporting her sporting ambition and Olympic hopes this year. Ireland is an extremely important market for us and working with Deirdre affords us a unique opportunity to strengthen our Anglo-Irish relations and work towards growing and developing important links between London City Airport, Dublin and Ireland as a whole.”

Deirdre Ryan added: “I am extremely grateful for the support London City Airport has given me. Their sponsorship has allowed me to concentrate on my training on a full-time basis, giving me the best chance when I compete at this year’s Olympics. Located in the heart of the Olympic action and with such great connections to and from Dublin, the airport is an essential facility for Irish travellers, including myself.”

Editors note

London City Airport (LCY) is the only airport situated in London itself, just two miles from the site of the 2012 Olympic Games, three miles from Canary Wharf, seven miles from the City and 10 miles from London’s West End – linked to all via the LCY Docklands Light Railway station. Welcoming over 3 million passengers in 2011, LCY is not only uniquely convenient, but offers a uniquely rapid transit, through check-in and security to the departure lounge and gate, of around 20 minutes. 12 airlines fly out of LCY, serving over 40 destinations including Dublin, Madrid and Geneva – the latest additions for 2012 are Aberdeen, Venice, Basel, Mahon, Angers and Quimper. LCY is on Twitter (@londoncityairport) and further information about flights, destinations and airport services can be found at www.londoncityairport.com.
