Formerly a part of East Germany and badly bombed by Allied forces during WWII, the attractive city of Dresden today stands restored and reinvented as a genuine cultural treasure. Aside from its superb museums and towering rebuilt landmarks – the gorgeous Frauenkirche being a prime example – its riverside setting also grants it some excellent beer gardens, cycle paths and parks. And as the capital city of the feisty Saxony region, it offers plenty in the way of pubs and nightlife.
