It may be small, but the Isle of Man more than makes up for its diminutive area with bags of character and cultural interest. For most of the year it’s a peaceful haven, where life revolves around cosy pubs, sleepy seaside villages and some surprisingly smart restaurants. Walkers and birdwatchers roam the wildflower-dotted cliffs and sunbathers relax on the postcard-ready beaches. Between May and July, though, the whole atmosphere changes as 50,000 bike fans pour across the island for the noisy and super-charged Tourist Trophy motorbike-racing season.
