STEM in Aviation event

The airport hosts a STEM in Aviation Challenge in partnership with ELBA and the ExCel London. During this Challenge East London Students receive presentations from representatives working in the STEM and aviation industry. The airport hosted a STEM in Aviation Day in partnership with the East London Business Alliance and the ExCel London. A total of 214 schools from across East London attended this 2017 flagship education event.

This event aims to give young East Londoners insight in the application of science and technology in the aviation industry and to inspire them to choose Science, Technology, Engineering and Math’s (STEM) subjects in school. During the event students were introduced to the application of STEM subjects in the Aviation industry. Through the event, the airport addresses the skills gap in the local area by inspiring the next generation workers to take up the necessary skills to meet the future employment demand.

Industry volunteers from Bechtel, Accenture, NATS and LCY’s non-aero revenue team presented different technologies utilised at the airport. In the afternoon students worked in teams to complete a STEM orientated business challenge and pitch their idea in front of a judging panel and the audience. The winning team received a flight simulation experience and an airport tour.

For more information on the event read our press release.

Robert Sinclair, Chief Executive Officer at London City Airport, said:

“STEM in Aviation Day demonstrates to secondary students how attractive and exciting this career path can be, with a rare opportunity to see and experience these innovations first-hand.

“With construction due to begin in early 2018 on the airport’s £430 million development programme, we know how important events like this are to reduce the skills gap, inspire the next generation, and create real socio-economic benefits for the local area.”
