Bern’s cobbled streets and red-roofed houses on the banks of the Aare River give it a small-town charm.
Its UNESCO-listed old town has a medieval look and feel, but the stylish cafes and designer shops hidden in its pretty arcades offer a very modern distraction. With brilliant museums, a dynamic nightlife and 100 striking – sometimes macabre – fountains make it a must-explore city.
The Swiss love a party. From Bern’s dark heady clubs and cosy old beer pubs to its swish cocktail bars and relaxed live music bars, you’ll have plenty to do after dark. Most restaurants and cafés turn into bars come sundown, but on summer evenings, Kornhausplatz and Bärenplatz are particularly lively, with locals and visitors enjoying a glass or two on the terraces.
Hidden by the majestic sandstone arcades in Bern’s pretty old town are several bars and heady clubs. A couple of favourites include the patio and great cocktails of Compass Bar at Rathausgasse 66, right next to the Zytglogge clock tower. Around the corner on Theaterplatz, you can drink beer brewed on-site at Adrianos Bar & Café.
