The grand city of Rennes is urban Brittany at its most charming.
Historic cobbled streets lined with bars, shops and pretty terraces link together churches, parks and museums in a city that offers intimacy during daytime and friendly Breton cheer when the sun goes down.
Festival des Tombées de la Nuit
During the first week of July, various venues stage artistic events incorporating music, film, dance, theatre and spoken word as part of the Festival des Tombées de la Nuit. This is a city-wide celebration of Breton culture and traditions with a contemporary twist.
Each December for the last four decades, Les Rencontres Trans Musicales, or Les Trans for short, has brought leading French and international musicians to Rennes. Nirvana, Björk, Daft Punk and the Beastie Boys are among the artists to have headlined in previous years.
Created in the 1990s, the Mythos storytelling festival has evolved into a broad-ranging celebration of the vocal arts. Poetry, song and narrative theatre forms the basis of the festival, which takes place in the pretty Thabor gardens for 10 days each April.
