Essential Sights
RRS Discovery
Set sail into Dundee’s nautical history on the RRS Discovery docked at the aptly named Discovery Point. The Royal Research Ship (RRS), governed by Captain Scott on his first expedition to the Antarctic in 1900, was originally built in Dundee and retired there in 1986. Now you can embark on your own voyage to Antarctica thanks to audio visual shows, computer-based interactive experiences, and displays on the artefacts of the crew. All aboard!
V&A Dundee
With such a rich cultural background, past and present, it’s no surprise that Dundee is home to the only other V&A museum outside of London. Whether you’re a design buff, artist, or someone who just loves all things creative, you could easily spend a day or more looking around the award winning artefacts and displays the V&A museum has to offer. They also offer a range of activities that are perfect for all ages, throughout the year - where better to hone your artistic skills!
Mills Observatory
Nothing sounds more romantic than a night under the stars, or at least until it begins raining. However, if you take a stroll up to the Mills Observatory on Balgay Hill summit, you may have a little less of a soggy experience! As Britain’s first purpose-built public observatory, it was originally gifted to the people of Dundee by John Mills in 1935. He was a linen and twine manufacturer, but also a keen amateur scientist and wanted to encourage the public to have a greater understanding of science. That’s why today it’s one of the free places to visit in Dundee that will leave you completely starry eyed under the night sky.
Dundee Science Centre
Enjoy an explosive start to your holiday with a trip to Dundee Science Centre. This is the perfect day out for the family, with over 80 hands on, interactive exhibits to engage and educate children of all ages. The exhibitions hosted by the museum dive into other topics, such as history and geography for an all encompassing experience. With day tickets costing no more than £10 (and free for under 3 year olds), whether you’ve got a science buff in your group or just need to escape the rain, Dundee Science Centre is sure to keep everyone entertained all day (maybe even longer!).
