Birthplace of the Renaissance, one-time home to Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael, and an Aladdin’s cave of artistic masterpieces, Florence is a cultural powerhouse. From world-leading art galleries such as the Uffizi to timeless masterpieces including Michelangelo’s David, via some of Italy’s finest food, Florence is an unbeatable destination.
Getting active
Florence may be associated with history and culture more often than with outdoor activities, but the city’s size means it offers endless opportunities for manageable walking tours. One obvious route is up the Piazzale Michelangelo, where you’ll be rewarded for your efforts with sweeping views over the whole of Florence.
Florence is also a very bicycle-friendly city, with operators including I Bike Florence offering a range of tours throughout the city. Tours take in sights such as the Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti and the Duomo.
Another of Florence’s famous landmarks is the Arno River, and urban rafting is a fantastic way to travel down it. Firenze Rafting runs tours that see you follow the Arno for just over a mile (2km), taking in sights such as the National Library and Uffizi Gallery and passing beneath the arches of the Ponte Vecchio, one of the world’s most famous bridges. Guides are also available to help point out the historic sights you’re paddling past, and you can even finish your tour with an aperitivo beneath the workshops of the Vasari Corridor.
Excursions
Florence has plenty to keep visitors occupied within the city limits, but there are three excursions within two hours’ drive that are perfect for a half-day or day trip.
Tuscan wine-tasting tours
The vineyards of Tuscany are justly famous for their wine, and many of them are easily accessible on a day trip from Florence. The famous region of Chianti lies within an hour’s drive of the city, with tours available to book through countless operators.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa
Florence has no shortage of picture-postcard Italian icons, but there’s another around 90 minutes’ drive west in the form of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The world’s most famous wonky building is well worth a visit while you’re here.
Truffle-hunting
A walk through the woods with an expert truffle-hunter will help you find this jewel in the crown of Tuscan cuisine. Afterwards, you can enjoy the fruits of your labour at a traditional meal.
