The business travel guide to Dusseldorf from London

Whether you're flying to Dusseldorf for a short meeting, a longer project or one of the many trade fairs the city hosts, it helps to have all the essential info at a glance. That's where our quick guide comes in – here's everything you need to know about travelling to Dusseldorf from London on business.

Dusseldorf: Need-to-know

The state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, Dusseldorf is Germany's seventh most populous city with about the same population as Bristol and half again the area. It's also one of the country's richest cities with a burgeoning start-up scene, as well as major art and fashion credentials. Significantly, Dusseldorf is also a hub for international trade fairs on everything from wine to printing equipment; most fairs are hosted at the enormous Messe Dusseldorf centre. Consequently, though Dusseldorfers have a strong identity and are proud of their city, there's an international feel and, as in most German cities, English is widely spoken.

Getting from London to Dusseldorf

Here's the easy bit. It's a short flight between London City Airport and Dusseldorf of 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 25 minutes. During the week there are six or seven flights daily in both directions, with departures from early morning until evening, so you'll find one to suit you – check the full timetable for details or browse for availability. There are two departures in either direction on weekends.

Getting to and from Dusseldorf airport

If you're visiting for a trade fair at Messe Dusseldorf you'll be pleased to know it's sensibly located by the airport, around 10 minutes' drive away. Try the taxi ranks on the Arrivals and Departures level, or hire a car before you go for the quickest journey, or you can take the 896 shuttle bus between the airport and Messe Dusseldorf.

The S-Bahn urban train is the easiest way to get to and from Dusseldorf city centre. Dusseldorf airport has two train stations – one for the S-Bahn (called Dusseldorf Airport Terminal Station) and one for longer-range intercity trains (called Dusseldorf Airport Station). For the city you want the S-Bahn station, which is underneath the main terminal building – take the S-11 to Dusseldorf Hauptbahnhof, the main station.

If you're pushed for time or just want ultimate convenience you'll find lots of hotels near both the trade fairground and the airport – check our current deals on hotels in Dusseldorf or have a browse using our booking portal.

Getting around Dusseldorf

You can cover most of Dusseldorf centre on foot, but the city and its surrounding are also served by the S-Bahn. You can find lots of useful information, including a full map of S-Bahn and bus routes, on the website of Rheinbahn, the city's transport operator.

Travelling for the day

You can easily get to Dusseldorf and back in a day from London City Airport. During the week departures begin at either 0725 or 0730 and the final return flight from Dusseldorf is between 1820 and 1910, so a day trip with several meetings is entirely feasible.

Longer stays in Dusseldorf

As a major international business hub Dusseldorf is well-setup for business travellers and there are comfortable hotels all over the city. There's a good selection near the train station, but if you're staying for a few days or more and want a neighbourhood with a little more character then there are also plenty just to the west in and around the altstadt (old town).

Make the most of your trip to Dusseldorf

If you like to get a little more than just business done on your travels then you'll find a lot to like about Dusseldorf. It's a smart, sophisticated city with some excellent museums and art galleries, such as the Museum Kunstpalast, which showcases a wide range of artworks. Dusseldorf also knows how to party and you'll find a real sense of fun in the altstadt, home to a massive number of bars, including the brewpubs that make the city's famous altbier.
