Halloween Poll Reveals World's Scariest Sounding Airport

Unless you usually fly by broomstick, there are some airports that may give people a fright this week.

The world’s top ten scariest sounding airports have been revealed in a poll by London City Airport.

While London’s airports aren’t likely to give you nightmares – Heathrow is LHR, Gatwick is LGW and London City is LCY – there are many with far more sinister sounding codes.

Top Ten:

  1. BOO – Bodø, Norway
  2. DIE – Arrachart, Madagascar
  3. AXE – Xanxerê, Brazil
  4. HEL – Helsinki Vantaa, Finland
  5. GUT – Gütersloh, Germany
  6. KIL – Kilwa, Congo
  7. SIN – Singapore Changi International, Singapore
  8. BAT – Chafei Amsei, Brazil
  9. AGH – Ängelholm-Helsingborg, Sweden
  10. DED – Dehradun, India

Declan Collier, Chief Executive of London City Airport said:  “It’s amazing how many airport codes spell out blood-curdling words.  On Halloween it would be rather appropriate to be flying to Juwata in Indonesia or Tremonton in the USA – TRK or TRT.  However, I think most people reading the top ten will feel more like Roland Garros on Réunion Island or Carlton Hill in Australia – RUN and CRY.”

Airport codes are allocated by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
