Bar TEN 28 Opens at London City Airport

13/06/2008

London City Airport this week opened the newest addition to its existing seven food and beverage outlets – Bar Ten 28. Located in the new extension of the airport’s departure lounge, Bar Ten 28 combines the contemporary style of an international bar with the favourites of the business traveller.

Bar Ten 28’s name was inspired by the airport’s single runway directions – 10 and 28. Operated by HMS Host Europe, part of the Autogrill Group, the menu at Bar Ten 28 includes light snacks, also for take away, as well as an extensive international drinks assortment including fine wines and cocktails.

“We are very pleased to add this exciting bar concept to our offering of food and beverage locations here at London City Airport,” said Walter Seib, Managing Director of HMSHost Europe. “The addition of this quality and trendsetting location fits right into the unique airport concept of London City Airport. We expect it to be very popular especially with the high numbers of frequent flyers – both business and leisure. “Making the traveller’s day better” is of course our aim. We feel that this concept will create a pleasant stop in their short dwell time at this efficient airport.”

Richard Gooding OBE, Chief Executive of London City Airport, commented on the opening of the new outlet: “Bar Ten 28 is an exciting addition to the food and beverage offerings at the airport. The bar is named after the directions of the airport’s single runway – 10 and 28 - and the design, conceived by Harrison Design, offers a comfortable and stylish backdrop that is aesthetically very impressive. The open concept of the bar gives travellers the opportunity to make the most of the extended departure lounge before making the very short walk to the aircraft steps.”

Philip Harrison, Managing Director of Harrison Design, explains the concept: “When tasked with designing this space, we took into consideration the airport’s connection with its primary audience - the business traveller. The journey that passengers take from the point of clearing security through to the Aviator Lounge at the end of extended departure lounge is light and airy throughout, offering a sense of space that is unique to London City Airport. The overall character of the space is deliberately mellow with a comfortable and calm environment that is ideal for both work and relaxation. We have utilised soft and warm materials including timber and polished limestone floors; marble surfaces and leather seating to avoid the frenetic, high energy emotion that is often found in airport departure lounges. The bar fascia also has a mood-changing illumination designed to rotate according to the time of day.  Overall, all elements of the extended departure lounge and Bar Ten 28 have a sense of intimacy that is recognised and appreciated by the airport’s core audience, whilst retaining clean uncluttered lines and a fresh, contemporary overall appearance."

Bar Ten 28 is the sixth food and beverage location operated by HMS Host at London City Airport. The company already successfully operates Trattoria restaurant; The Bar and Presto in the departure lounge with Coffee Corner and Meridian Line restaurants located landside. Other brands at the airport include EAT and Caffe Nero.

London City Airport’s departure lounge has been extended and reconfigured to incorporate some 250 additional passenger seats, an enhanced retail offering with WH Smith and Nuance, and a new lounge featuring high-speed internet points and live sports screens.

In 2007 London City Airport witnessed record growth with a 23 per cent increase in passenger numbers over the previous year. 2008 is forecast to be the most successful to date with 3.5 million passengers expected to travel through London City Airport.

A total of 34 UK and European destinations are currently served by ten airlines out of London City Airport, with British Airways launching a business-class only service to New York next year.
