London City Airport, the United Kingdom's leading business airport, was last night awarded the prestigious European Regional Airline Association’s (ERA) annual Airport Achievement Award, demonstrating the outstanding success of the airport in its 21 year history.
The award was presented to London City Airport's Chief Executive, Richard Gooding OBE, at the ERA annual gala dinner in Manchester, UK. Accepting the award, Gooding commented: "It is an honour to accept this award that recognises the airport's overall achievement over the past 12 months. It is also 21 years since operations began in 1987. We are committed to continuing to deliver a premium service to passengers as London's favourite airport and supporting London's status as financial capital of the world."
The panel of judges, each carefully selected for their knowledge, experience and expertise within the aviation industry, comprises senior industry experts including past and present CEOs of European airlines.
London City Airport witnessed passenger growth of 23 per cent in 2007. When compared with growth at all other UK airports, which stands at just two per cent, the judges recognised this as a massive achievement. It was acknowledged that the airport has demonstrated its success through a well organised performance partnership with its customers, airlines, and a service-orientated approach vis-a-vis its passengers.
Finally, the ERA judges largely commended the efficiency of London City Airport's internal planning and service delivery process as it currently operates at 97 per cent of its permitted capacity.
Yesterday, London City Airport was granted permission to grow by the London Borough of Newham. The airport had applied for an increase in movements from 80,000 to 120,000 per annum, a move that will create a further 1000 jobs at the airport, currently the largest private sector employment site in Newham. The application was supported by leading international organisations and London's Mayor, Boris Johnson, who acknowledged the enormous contribution the airport makes to London's economy.
London City Airport is the only airport in Europe to hold an ERA Palme d’Or, a special distinction that is granted to airlines and airports for sustained excellence.
About London City Airport
The only airport actually in London, London City Airport is just two miles from the site of the 2012 Olympic Games; three miles from Canary Wharf and six miles from the City of London.
In May 2008 London City Airport completed construction of four new aircraft parking stands and expansion of its departure lounge at a cost of some £30 million. Ten airlines currently operate direct services to 33 European destinations, with British Airways launching a business-class only service to New York in autumn 2009.
Founded in 1980, ERA is the recognised representative body for intra-European air transport. It currently represents 60 airlines and over 140 Associate and Affiliate members, including airframe and engine manufacturers, airports, suppliers and service providers from all over Europe.
ERA is governed by a Board, which is elected by the membership at the annual General Assembly. The Board comprises 12 ERA airline presidents and seven representatives from the major associate member companies including two airport members. The Board is responsible for overseeing the activities and strategy of the Association.
