A new £30,000 fund to support local charities and organisations which enable significant and positive change for communities near London City Airport has been created to mark the airport’s 30th anniversary year.
Details of the 30th Anniversary Community Sponsorship Fund have been unveiled as part of London City Airport’s participation in the BITC (Business in the Community) Responsible Business Week, which commences today.
The funding is available to social enterprises, schools, charities, community organisations and not-for-profit organisations from eight London boroughs. Judges will focus on funding for projects which mirror the airport’s own CSR priorities of Education, Employment, Community Engagement & Local Economy and Environment.
Eligible organisations from the London boroughs of Newham, Greenwich, Tower Hamlets, Havering, Barking & Dagenham, Redbridge, Waltham Forest and Bexley can apply for grants (ranging from £300 to £3000) via the airport’s website from Monday 24 April until the deadline of Friday 28 July.
Details of the fund, and London City Airport’s wide spectrum of community investment and engagement, focussing on employment and education, can also be found in London City Airport’s 2016 CSR Report, published here today.
Declan Collier, CEO of London City Airport, said:
"Our ambition for the 30th Anniversary Community Sponsorship Fund is to empower groups in East London so that the region, and its people, can reach their full potential, with a funding boost to deserving initiatives.
"Over the past three decades London City Airport has established itself as a major East London employer, with 65% of employees coming from the local area. We’ve continually invested in our communities and the new fund ensures the 30th anniversary is a shared celebration with the surrounding area. I look forward to receiving the applications and recognising the fantastic work of local groups."
Recommendations for grant recipients will be provided to the London City Airport Consultative Committee (comprising representatives from each borough) ahead of allocation to successful applicants from early September, as the airport prepares to mark 30 years since HM Queen opened the airport on 5 November 1987.
Responsible Business Week is organised by Business in the Community (BITC), and runs from Monday 24 April until Friday 28 April 2017, providing a focal point for responsible business practice across some the UK’s largest companies. In 2016, over 200 companies participated, with 2017 the inaugural year for London City Airport’s involvement.
