London City Airport Wins Responsible Business Champion Award

London City Airport (LCY) has been awarded a Responsible Business Champion award by the All-Party Parliamentary Corporate Responsibility Group (APCRG).

The award is part of the APCRG’s responsible business scheme for which MPs are invited to identify an outstanding local business which they believe deserves to be their Constituency Responsible Business Champion on the basis of its positive impact on their constituency.

LCY was nominated by Stephen Timms, MP for East Ham, and will now enter the running for the national version of the award, up against the likes of local departments in Fujitsu UK (Basingstoke, Hampshire), Marks & Spencer (Loughborough, Leicestershire), and Sony (Ogmore, Glamorgan).

The winners of the national title will be announced on July 15th at a reception hosted by the Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow.

The criteria for the award are “the company’s overall impact in its constituency, including any enduring legacy; the extent of employees' engagement in the work for which it has been nominated; support for the company's work from local partners; and the extent to which it goes beyond what the company is legally or contractually obliged to do.”

The award presentation came during LCY’s volunteering fortnight, in which 41 employees gave up 315 hours to help out in a number of local projects in the community, including creating new educational gardens for Britannia Village Primary School, and repainting Beckton Community Centre’s main hall.

Presenting the local award to Declan Collier, CEO of London City Airport, Stephen Timms MP said:

“I am delighted that London City Airport has been nominated by the All-Party Parliamentary Corporate Responsibility Group. It is an exemplar of corporate responsibility and I am always impressed by the wide range of initiatives the airport supports. I particularly welcome the Airport’s consistent commitment to supporting local residents into employment.”

“It’s a good time to present the certificate! The airport has just finished its Volunteers’ Fortnight. Staff from the airport have been helping out over the last two weeks with organisations including Newham City Farm, Britannia Village Primary School and Beckton Community Centre. The fortnight is just one example of the contribution the airport makes locally.

“I would like to thank all those who gave their time to be a part of Volunteers’ Fortnight as well as those who take part in some of the airport’s other projects, whether that be finding pathways into work for unemployed residents; working with local schools; or partnering with local sports clubs to promote healthy lifestyles.”

Declan Collier, Chief Executive Officer, London City Airport, said: “We are very pleased to be recognised for our efforts in the community and of course grateful to Stephen for nominating us for this fantastic award. Our fingers are firmly crossed for the national awards next month.

“Our ties to the local area are very important to us and we are always looking at ways in which we can give something back to the community, be it through providing pathways into work for local residents, or working with our partners to promote healthy lifestyles.”
