Encouraging quieter flight
London City Airport runs a scheme of incentives and penalties based on departure noise levels, as measured by our noise monitoring system.
These penalty limits are the most stringent of any UK airport for daytime operations. The scheme encourages airlines to operate aircraft more quietly by rewarding them with credits. Each year, the airline with the most credits co-partners with LCY to deliver our Community Fund.
Airlines which exceed upper noise limits are charged a fixed penalty, at a rate of £600 per dB of exceedance. Any money collected is added to the Community Fund.
Every year, we review the credit award thresholds and upper noise limits with the London Borough of Newham, to make sure they stay at appropriate levels.
