Being a good neighbour matters
At our location in East London in the historic Royal Docklands, London City Airport has transformed from an airport welcoming just 133,000 passengers in 1988 to a record-breaking 5 million+ in 2019. Post-pandemic, figures continue to grow.
An East London business at heart
Though we have plenty of international connections, over 64%of our employees are locals and we contribute £750 millionto the UK and local economy each year.
The City Airport Development Programme (CADP) aims to grow this to £1.5 billion by 2025, by allowing us to improve the airport’s airfield infrastructure with seven new aircraft parking stands, a parallel taxi lane and extended terminal building. CADP will also create 1600 new jobs, plus 600 during construction.
Responsible Growth
We feel responsible for ensuring East London benefits from our growth. We want to empower the area and its people to reach their full, vibrant potential. Because we know our operations can affect local communities, we aim to do everything we can to manage, ease and, where possible, reduce our impact on East Londoners.
Our strategy for the future:
Employment
Allocate over half of the 2100 jobs created by CADP to East Londoners
Work with local partners to establish our first apprenticeship programme to further upskill local people and improve their access to opportunities in the labour market
Continue to invest in programmes that upskill young East Londoners and ready them for work
Education
Run tailored education programmes in every East London borough
Welcome 5000+ schoolchildren each year to learn about airport operations and opportunities
Environment
Continue to be the UK leader in surface access and promote more sustainable modes of transport
Read our Surface Access Strategy 2017-2025
Manage and reduce negative impact on the local community and explain what we’re doing to lessen impact on noise and air quality
Read our Air Quality Action Plan.
Engagement & Economy
Run community roadshows each year in East London boroughs
Run annual Meet the Buyer events to help local companies prosper as we grow
Share the airport’s best practices with East London businesses
Communicate opportunities and relevant construction/operational developments to our local community every quarter
We’ll supplement the above with continued investment in programmes and initiatives designed to help East London thrive.
