Encouraging young women to consider careers in the aviation sector
LCY partners with 15billionebp to deliver this 3-month programme for young women from East London schools. It aims to showhow Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects can offer solutions to challenges facing the aviation industry.
As part of our wider goal to improve gender balance across the industry, the programme aims to encourage and provide more opportunities for young women from all communities to seek careers in the sector.
Historically, London City Airport’s workforce has been around 70% male to 30% female. However, 2022 data shows a positive move towards a 60/40 split. We’re keen to increase this further through positive role modelling and leading initiatives with local groups/schools to highlight career options for women.
Education initiatives
We’re committed to supporting our local community through our sustainability strategy.
As well as Women in Aviation, we host STEM in Aviation each November at ExCeL London for up to 500 young people from the local East London area. The event brings them together with businesses including Boeing, British Airways CityFlyer and Accenture, to understand the skills required for different roles in the aviation and STEM sectors.
In 2021/22 and 2022/23 we also ran a Youth Mentoring Programme to support local young people post-pandemic.
